Drums of the Pacific Luau Review (Hyatt Regency Maui, Kaanapali Beach): Is This Maui Luau Worth It for Families?

Are you planning a trip to Maui and trying to figure out which luau to book? Read my full experience at the Drums of the Pacific Luau at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa, including what to expect, food, drinks, seating tips, and whether it’s a good fit for families.

The Maui Luau That Started It All And What It’s Like to Go Back with Kids

Back in 2004, I took my very first trip to Hawaii. Growing up in Buffalo, New York, Hawaii felt so far away, and our family vacations were usually road trips. After moving to Los Angeles after college, I finally made it to Maui. I completely fell in love with the island, the culture, and the food.

On that first trip, we stayed at a nearby hotel on Ka'anapali Beach and walked to the luau at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa. It was my first luau and my first mai tai. It instantly became one of those travel memories that sticks with you. I learned how to hula dance, tried Kahlua pork, and just remember thinking that I couldn’t believe I was actually in Hawaii.

Fast forward 22 years, and I couldn’t wait to experience it again. This time with my husband and our two kids (ages 10 and 12). This luau has always had a special place in my heart, so I was really excited to come back.

If you’re planning a Maui trip, here’s everything you need to know before you book the Drums of the Pacific Luau at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa.

Why This Maui Luau Stands Out

Set right on Kaʻanapali Beach, this luau has been around for almost 40 years, which says a lot. It’s one of those experiences they’ve really figured out over time.

The show, created by Tihati Productions Ltd, isn’t just something you sit and watch. It walks you through different Polynesian cultures in a way that actually keeps you and the kids engaged as it mixes music, storytelling, and performances from Hawaiʻi and neighboring islands.

From the moment you walk in, you’re welcomed, taken care of, and can settle into your table.

Arrive Early (It’s Part of the Experience)

If you can, arrive a little early. The hotel itself is part of the fun. In the Hyatt lobby there are penguins, parrots, and plenty of photo spots (don’t miss the aloha sign).

Hyatt Lobby

Hyatt Regency Maui Resort has lots to see in the lobby for kids and a great photo opportunity with the Aloha sign.

If you’re staying at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort or nearby in Kaʻanapali, this is one of the easiest luaus to attend. We loved not being able to leave our hotel room and arrive in less five minutes. It’s a simple walk from nearby resorts along the Ka'anapali beach path.

A warm Hawaiian welcome

There are two check-in lines; one for premium seating and one for standard. Premium seating is allowed in before standard but it all moves quickly and feels very organized. All tables are preassigned, so there’s no need to stress about where you’ll be sitting. Your location is based on when you booked and your ticket type, which takes the guesswork out of it. If you’ve booked premium seating, you’ll be guided to take a professional photo that will be printed and delivered to your table later in the evening. It’s a fun keepsake without having to think about it or ask someone to take a picture.

A welcome Mai Tai

After checking in and your lei greeting, you are offered a drink (mai tai or non-alcoholic fruit punch) before being shown to your table.

From the moment you walk in to the luau, you feel welcomed. After your lei greeting, you are offered a drink (mai tai or non-alcoholic fruit punch) before being shown to your table. Grabbing the drink while walking in was fabulous. I could enjoy the moment without waiting in line for a drink. It instantly feels like the luau has started.

Don’t worry, if mai tais aren’t for you, you can order any drink you’d prefer from your server. We were taken to our table and shown how to pull up the drink menu on our phone. Shortly after, a server came over to take our which made ordering easy for the rest of the night.

Drinks: Fun, Easy, and Very Maui

The drink menu is exactly what you want at a luʻau. It’s tropical, fun, and not overly complicated.

They serve all the classics (mai tais, piña coladas) along with a few unique cocktails made with local Maui spirits. I stayed loyal to my mai tai, while my husband tried a few of their specialty drinks including the Tahitian Bay which is pau vodka, lemonade, blue curacao.

One fun touch is that they even have a custom beer brewed called Aka’ula ale, just for theHyatt Regency Maui by Maui Brewing Co., along with other Maui-brewed beers and hard seltzers. The Aka’ula ale is a golden ale, “infused with blood orange, pineapple and tangerine notes.” I tried the Kohola Brewery Lahaina Haze IPA, which was good.

For kids, there are plenty of non-alcoholic options, and this ended up being one of our favorite little moments of the night. The bartender encouraged my daughter to come up and describe what flavors she liked and he created a custom drink just for her. She felt so proud ordering on her own, and it made the experience feel extra special.

The Food: An important part of the luau experience

I’m going to get right to the point: the food was really good and there was a lot of it.

They had all the traditional luau favorites, and my personal go-to, the Kahlua pork, did not disappoint. There’s just something about luau-style Kahlua pork that hits differently than anything else you’ll find on the island.

Beyond that, there was a great variety including fresh ‘ahi poke, lomi lomi salmon, island fish, teriyaki chicken, and paniolo beef. There were also plenty of sides like fried rice, noodles, local vegetables, and even poi if you want to try something more traditional.

What I really appreciated was how clearly everything was labeled. Every dish noted if it was vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, or sesame-free. It made navigating the buffet so much easier—especially if you’re traveling with kids or have dietary needs.

The buffet setup was one of the best I’ve seen. There were three identical buffets with lines on each side, allowing for people to move through 6 lines quickly. It didn’t feel chaotic and there wasn’t much of a line. They truly encourage you to go back for seconds (or thirds), which makes the whole experience feel relaxed instead of rushed.

Desserts were constantly being replenished too, so no stress about missing out. From pineapple upside-down cake to brownies and haupia, there was always more coming out.

Timing It with Sunset

The luau starts around 5:00 pm, and sunset will vary depending on the time of year (for us, it was around 6:30). I highly recommend stepping out during a break in the show and walk to the water for sunset photos. We grabbed one of our favorite family photos of the entire trip here.

The Show (And Why Kids Stay Engaged)

The show was entertaining for all of us, but what really stood out was how they used the entire space.

The show isn’t just on stage, it’s all around you.

It’s not just a stage performance. The dancers move throughout the audience, which makes it feel immersive no matter where you’re sitting. You feel like part of it, not just watching from your seat.

If it’s your first luau or a special occasion, I do recommend upgrading to premium seating. Especially with kids, having a great view makes a difference.

The Unexpected Highlights

One of my favorite parts? The shared tables.

The shared tables brings a sense of community and shared fun.

We ended up chatting with other families about where they were from and what they had planned in Maui. It adds to that community feel that luaus are really all about.

The hostess for the evening also brought a very authentic Hawaiian vibe. She was warm, welcoming, and not overdone.

After the show, the dancers came out for photos, which was such a fun moment for the kids to interact with them up close.

Kids’ Review (Always My Favorite Part)

I always ask my kids what they think as you never know what’s going to stand out.

  • My son loved the dancers. He kept talking about how coordinated they were (though I’m pretty sure unlimited juice and poke were also highlights).

  • My daughter loved learning how to hula and the fire dancers (no surprise there).

Is the Drums of the Pacific Luʻau Worth It?

Yes, especially for families.

The Drums of the Pacific Luau at the Hyatt Regency Maui easy, well-organized, and thoughtfully done in a way that keeps both kids and adults engaged. You don’t feel rushed, you don’t feel overwhelmed, and you leave feeling like you experienced something special, not just checked a box.

With so many performers, it really feels immersive.

If you’re staying in Kaʻanapali, it’s one of the most convenient and family-friendly luaus on Maui.

This experience was provided in collaboration with the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa. All opinions are my own, and I only share experiences that I genuinely recommend for families.
